Ah, Alma. Over 24 hours of travel. 20 hours of bagpiping. Some really good piping. n3crokitty missed a good time. As with St Louis last fall, it quickly degenerated into really bad innuendo, and at some point during the trip was the obligatory "science" argument. The Toronto Police and the Peel Regional Police were the two Grade I bands there, and it was just amazing to hear. There was really nothing in technique that you could find to distinguish between the two, it was really about the musicality of their playing. We heard James MacHattie, the PM of Toronto Police play his piobaireachd, which was amazing. I think he would stand a good chance of winning medals if he went to Scotland. He was easily the best piobaireachd player I heard on Saturday.Current Mood: blah

Where would we be without espresso? Asleep at 17.00, that is where.
M danced last night at BLB for Catalyst. It is the most I have seen of the movement Emily has created for the evening length piece coming up. <plug>Heat and Life. Last weekend in October. Soap Factory. Catalyst</plug> As always, Emily's movement vocabulary leaves me hungry for more. It is easily some of the most expressive and accessable dance I have seen, and Emily is not afraid to make the audience uncomfortable.
The best question of the night was from an audience member who was concerned that with the perceived seriousness of the subject matter, if it was OK to laugh. It sounded as if she were asking permission to do so. Emily's response was to talk about how she (and Catalyst) is interested in the audience's reaction - whatever that reaction is. M & I were talking about it afterwards, and we both felt that although the question was valid, a more interesting question is "why does this make me laugh". Laughter seems to be a social signifier - a way that humans can create and strengthen connections. It is happens when in tense social siituations, as a way perhaps of lessening confrontation, or deflecting anger. In a situation such as a dance or theater performance, the performer creates such this tension through movement, body language, and words.
Some current theories as to what we find humorous are the incongruity theory - our expectations don't match the actual, the superiority theory - we feel superior to the object of the joke, and the relief theory, in which tension is added to incongruity to produce humour. So to my mind, I wonder which of these theories fits what I felt at the time I was watching and laughed, however, I think the reason for asking permission intrigues me because I think that it implies a view of humour in which laughter based on the perception of superiority is "wrong" and therefore we must police ourselves to make sure our thoughts are pure.
And on that note, I love piobaireachd.Current Mood: bouncy Current Music: PM GNM Stoddart, BEM - The Battle of Auldearn

Went to Psycho Suzi's Friday night for the first time. adele_nine was working, so we talked to her on her breaks, and saw a bunch of other people we knew who were also stopping by for drinks and whatnot. The food there was fun & good, I don't know where else you can get deviled eggs in the TC, and the pizza we had was quite very nice, what with the roasted garlic, basil, and pine nuts.
Saturday was final recovery from from last weekend and the week. Driving over 24 hours in 4 days and attending a wedding is not conducive to a well rested body and mind. It doesn't help that I am a night owl and tend not to go to sleep until late, even when exhausted.

That I have actually set this up.
n3crokitty had better come to Alma. If necessary, I will kidnap her next Thursday and drug her until we are halfway there.
Went with M this morning to rehearsal for a few moments to record me playing pipes for samples. Fun, but required that I get up early, so now my day is all messed up.Current Mood: sleepy Current Music: Revolver Modele - Barbed Wire and Chloroform
